The night before winter break began, a huge storm blew in. I was supposed to be flying out at 9:30 a.m., but that flight was canceled, so my Mom scheduled another flight for 8:30 p.m. Mr. Kevin drove Cree and me to the airport at 2:30 p.m. to catch Cree’s earlier flight, and even though it was a very long wait for my flight, I was excited about seeing my family.
On the short flight to Charlotte, NC, where I was to catch a plane to New York, I met two very nice gentlemen who told me they would be on the same flight. I asked them if I could follow them to the gate, so I wouldn’t get lost. They said yes, and all the way to the gate I found myself saying over and over, “This flight is not going to be canceled,” but when we arrived at the gate we discovered that every flight to New York had been cancelled.
I called my parents and told them the news, and I was rebooked on a flight to Newark, NJ the next day at 10:00 p.m. My parents talked to the gentlemen, who were helping me, and they agreed to look after me. We rented rooms at a hotel, went to dinner, and I spent a lot of time on the phone with my parents. My new friends found an earlier flight out of a different airport, so the next day they rented a car, and we headed toward the other airport. Along the way, we stopped at a Bass Pro Shop, and then just for the fun of it, since we had time, we went to the North Carolina Speedway and took a tour, which included driving in a van on the Speedway. Then, we were on our way again.

I fell asleep in the car, and when I awoke we were at the airport. An hour and a half later, I was in New York, greeted by my whole family. Even though I missed a day with my family, I had quite an adventure, and I will always be grateful to the two nice gentlemen, who took me under their wings.

One Response to A Long Trip Home by Chana K.

  1. I'm sorry that you had to miss a day with your family, but what a learning and growing experience you had. And I bet your time at FMA made you much more able to cope with the circumstances, Chana.
