Thomas a Kempis says serenity is possible if we will only mind our own business. He states that if I want any peace and quiet I need to mind my own business. When I don’t I will be worrying about what other people say and do all the time and forget what I need to be doing. I can have peace if I don’t butt into other people’s business and instead focus on the most important person in my life – myself.
Peace is not letting all the distractions in life get to me. When I involve myself in other people’s business I get distracted from what I need to do. I lose sight of what needs to be done by being distracted by pointless matters that have nothing to do with me. When I do this, I hurt myself, and I hurt the person into whose business I was getting involved. Serenity, on the other hand, is nice, quiet, lovely, and harmonious, and it causes me to be happier than ever before.
If I stop getting involved in other people’s dramas, and let their business be their own, I can do all I need. I can do things I want to do because I am not burdening myself with other people’s troubles. I won’t worry myself with wondering what’s going on in other people’s lives. I can focus on myself, and that’s good enough for me because I will be more successful and serene.
